Tokenization: 84% of Institutions Make It a Strategic Priority (Broadridge)
The tokenization of real-world assets is crossing a historic threshold. According to a recent survey by Broadridge Financial Solutions, 84% of global financial institutions now consider tokenization a strategic priority. This figure, sharply higher than in previous years, reflects a massive adoption that is profoundly reshaping traditional financial markets.
Unprecedented Institutional Adoption
The Broadridge study, from a leading consulting firm specializing in financial infrastructure, reveals that tokenization is no longer a marginal experiment but a central pillar of financial institutions’ strategies. Among the 500 establishments surveyed—banks, asset managers, pension funds, and brokerage firms—84% said they had launched or were planning tokenization initiatives within the next 12 to 18 months.
This high adoption rate stems from several converging factors. On one hand, the technological maturation of blockchains and tokenization protocols now makes it possible to handle institutional volumes with high security and regulatory compliance standards. On the other hand, competitive pressure is pushing institutions to modernize infrastructure that is sometimes decades old.
“Financial institutions understand that tokenization is not a passing fad but a fundamental evolution of capital markets,” the Broadridge report emphasizes. “Operational efficiency gains, reduced settlement costs, and the ability to offer innovative financial products are all drivers accelerating this transition.”
At the time of writing, Bitcoin (BTC) is trading at $64,479 and Ethereum (ETH) at $1,871—levels reflecting a broadly stable crypto market attentive to signals of institutional adoption.
HSBC Joins the Bank of England’s Sandbox
In this accelerating context, HSBC, one of Europe’s largest banks with over $3 trillion in assets under management, has announced its entry into the Bank of England’s (BoE) Digital Securities Sandbox (DSS). This initiative allows the bank to test tokenization solutions for securities in a controlled regulatory environment.
The BoE Digital Securities Sandbox, launched in 2024, aims to explore how distributed ledger technology (DLT) can improve the UK’s financial market infrastructure. By joining this program, HSBC follows other major financial institutions that are testing the tokenization of bonds, equities, and other financial instruments.
HSBC’s entry into the UK’s DSS is particularly significant because it demonstrates that traditional banks, often perceived as resistant to change, are now at the forefront of financial innovation. The bank had already experimented with bond tokenization in 2023 via its HSBC Orion platform, but this new step marks a shift to a larger scale.
Wall Street Accelerates Toward Hybrid Markets
In the United States, Wall Street is not standing still. Major investment banks and traditional trading platforms are accelerating their tokenization projects, converging toward a hybrid market model that combines traditional financial infrastructure with blockchain technology.
This convergence is manifesting concretely through several underlying trends. Major exchanges like the NYSE and Nasdaq are exploring tokenized settlement solutions. Traditional brokers are integrating crypto features into their offerings. And asset managers are launching tokenized funds accessible to a broader clientele.
The tokenization of real-world assets—government bonds, equities, real estate, commodities—could represent a market worth several trillion dollars by 2030, according to the latest estimates from industry analysis firms. This potential explains the enthusiasm of financial institutions seeking to position themselves in this new market segment before it reaches full maturity.
Implications for the Crypto Ecosystem
This wave of institutional tokenization adoption has profound implications for the broader crypto ecosystem. On one hand, it legitimizes blockchain technology as a leading financial...
