Agentic Finance: Base Surpasses 100 Million AI Payments — Analysis of the Bet Reshaping Crypto’s Future

July 27, 2026, marks a quiet yet profound turning point in the history of the crypto industry. Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, announced that the Base network — Ethereum’s layer-2 (L2) solution developed by the exchange — has just crossed the threshold of 100 million payments processed by artificial intelligence agents. Far from being a mere publicity figure, this volume represents the transition from theory to practice for what the sector now calls “agentic finance.” This analysis explores in depth what this announcement means for the crypto ecosystem, its economic, competitive, and regulatory implications, and why it could well be one of the most important signals of 2026.

100 Million Transactions: Decoding a Key Figure

One hundred million. This is not a randomly chosen number. It represents the cumulative volume of transactions initiated and executed automatically by AI agents on the Base blockchain since the launch of the first dedicated tools for autonomous agents. To truly grasp the magnitude of this phenomenon, a few reference points are necessary.

In January 2026, this number was below 5 million. The growth is therefore 20 times higher in seven months, with a marked acceleration in the second quarter of 2026. If this trend is projected, the milestone of one billion agentic transactions could be reached before the end of the first half of 2027. By comparison, it took nearly two years for all DeFi protocols combined to accumulate 100 million transactions in their early days during 2020–2021.

This growth is not a matter of chance. Coinbase accompanied the announcement with the launch of an MCP (Model Context Protocol) tool for Base, allowing AI agents to manage transactions, execute trading orders, and make payments entirely autonomously. Concretely, an AI agent can now:

  • Receive instructions in natural language (“Buy $100 of ETH if the price drops below $3,000”)
  • Analyze on-chain data and real-time market conditions
  • Execute the transaction via Base with fees below $0.01
  • Report on execution and continuously adjust the strategy
  • Interact with other agents to form coordinated strategies

The MCP is not an innovation exclusive to Coinbase. The protocol was standardized by Anthropic (creator of Claude) and adopted by the industry as an open standard to allow AIs to interact with external tools. By integrating it natively into Base, Coinbase is betting that standardization is the key to mass adoption — rather than creating a proprietary protocol, they are relying on a standard already adopted by thousands of AI developers.

“Pivoting from Crypto to AI Is a Mistake” — The Armstrong Vision

In an interview granted to CoinDesk on the very day of the announcement, Brian Armstrong was particularly incisive about his strategic vision: “Some say you have to choose between crypto and AI. That’s a mistake. AI needs crypto to execute transactions autonomously, and crypto needs AI to find its killer use case.”

This statement comes at a time when the industry is going through a phase of identity questioning. On one hand, generative AI captures the vast majority of venture capital investments (over $45 billion raised by AI startups in 2026, versus roughly $8 billion for crypto). On the other hand, many crypto startups — especially in gaming and NFTs — struggle to find their market. The temptation is strong for some founders to “pivot to AI” by abandoning blockchain.

Armstrong rejects this dichotomy. For him, crypto and AI are complementary, not competitive. And the reasoning is relentless: an AI agent cannot open a traditional bank account. It has no social security number, no physical address, no ID, no phone number. But it can create a crypto wallet in a fraction of a second, interact with smart contracts, and execute programmable transactions without a human intermediary.

Crypto thus becomes the native banking system for machines. This is a thesis that Vitalik Buterin sketched out as early as 2022 in his writings on “AI-governed DAOs,” but it now finds concrete application at scale.

Franklin Templeton Predicted It — The Execution Is Here

On July 22, 2026, five days before the Coinbase announcement, American asset manager Franklin Templeton — which manages nearly $1.8 trillion in assets — published a resounding report signed by Sandy Kaul, head of digital assets and innovation. Her conclusion, unequivocal: agentic AI is the “killer use case” for blockchain.

The Franklin Templeton report identified three key factors to justify this thesis:

  • Alignment of incentives: AI agents need a native, frictionless, programmable payment system. Blockchain exactly meets this need.
  • On-chain transparency: every transaction by an agent is immutably recorded, allowing total auditability — a major asset for regulatory compliance.
  • Interoperability: an agent can interact with any DeFi protocol, any L2, any wallet, without needing specific permissions or integrations.

The timing between this report and the Coinbase announcement is striking. But it is not a coincidence: the industry as a whole had identified the potential of agentic finance, and Coinbase has just proven it is real, with supporting data.

The Rush for Agentic Finance: A Three-Way Battlefield

Coinbase is not alone in wanting to dominate this new market. July 27, 2026 saw a triple announcement that transforms agentic finance into a competitive battleground:

Coinbase / Base: The First-Mover Advantage

With 100 million agentic transactions and an already operational MCP infrastructure, Coinbase starts with a head start. Base benefits from several structural advantages:

  • A TVL (total value locked) exceeding $8 billion as of July 2026
  • A mature DeFi ecosystem with Aerodrome, Uniswap, Morpho, and dozens of other protocols
  • Transaction fees below $0.01, making microtransactions economically viable
  • Direct integration with Coinbase (the largest US exchange), offering a massive user launchpad
  • EVM compatibility, allowing any Ethereum smart contract to run on Base without modification

Robinhood Chain: The Aspiring Challenger

On the same day, Robinhood announced the launch of Robinhood Chain Mainnet, a blockchain designed specifically for agentic trading. The ambition is clear: Robinhood, which built its success on democratizing trading for individual investors, wants to do the same for AI agents. The platform offers:

  • Stock tokens representing traditional tokenized equities
  • A suite of DeFi products designed for trading algorithms
  • A “agentic trading” feature allowing AIs to trade on the platform

Robinhood has the advantage of its massive user base (over 50 million accounts) and its consumer brand. But its blockchain is new — it lacks the ecosystem and proven security of Base.

Gemini: The Cautious Veteran

For its part, Gemini (the Winklevoss brothers) unveiled an agentic trading feature on its existing platform. Technically less ambitious than Base or Robinhood Chain, Gemini’s approach is more cautious: allow AI agents to interact with its centralized exchange rather than building a dedicated blockchain. This approach has the advantage of regulatory simplicity — Gemini is already a regulated exchange in New York — but limits agent autonomy, as they remain dependent on a centralized platform.

On-Chain Analysis: What Do Base’s Data Really Say?

To validate Coinbase’s thesis, let’s examine the available data on the Base network:

  • Total transactions: Base now processes several million transactions per day, with 35% quarter-over-quarter growth. The share of transactions initiated by contracts (rather than human users) now exceeds 60%, an indicator of growing automation.
  • Total value locked (TVL): $8.2 billion, up 15% over the month. Although dominated by Aerodrome (DEX), TVL is diversifying with the arrival of lending, yield farming, and insurance protocols dedicated to agents.
  • Active addresses: The number of unique addresses interacting daily with Base has doubled since January 2026. A growing share of these addresses are AI agent wallets, recognizable by their transaction patterns (regular schedules, precise amounts, repetitive interactions).
  • Gas fees: Despite the increase in volume, fees on Base remain stable around $0.005–$0.01 per transaction, thanks to recent optimizations (EIP-4844 already active, data compression).
  • Bridge volumes: Bridges between Ethereum and Base continue to grow, indicating that AI agents use Base as an execution layer while settling on Ethereum mainnet for security.

These data confirm that the growth of agentic payments is not a statistical artifact or a publicity stunt, but indeed a structural trend.

Macroeconomic Implications: A New Engine for the Crypto Economy

Agentic finance could have profound consequences on the crypto economy as a whole. Let’s analyze the main transmission channels:

Volume and Liquidity

AI agents can trade 24/7, without fatigue, without emotion, without cognitive bias. Their constant activity could significantly increase on-chain liquidity and reduce volatility, especially during periods of low human activity (nights, weekends, holidays). Recent studies by Galaxy Digital show that BTC’s intraday volatility has already decreased by 12% since the beginning of the year, a trend some analysts attribute in part to the growing activity of agents.

New Economic Participants

AI agents are becoming full-fledged economic participants. A trading agent, a payment agent, a portfolio management agent — each with its own wallet, its own strategy, and soon its own legal personality? This question, which seemed abstract...
