Bitcoin Breaks $64,000: US CPI at Lowest Since 2020 Crushes Rate Hike Bets

The cryptocurrency market has just experienced a major turnaround. While speculation about another Federal Reserve rate hike had dominated investor discourse for weeks, the release of the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) for June has completely reshuffled the deck. With a month-over-month contraction of 0.4% — the weakest reading since 2020 — US inflation is showing signs of a much sharper slowdown than expected, and Bitcoin is taking advantage to break through the psychological threshold of $64,000.

At the time of the data release, Bitcoin was trading at $64,561, posting a 24-hour gain of 4.23%. Ethereum followed the same dynamic with a 6.13% rise to $1,870. The entire cryptocurrency market hailed these figures as a clear signal that inflationary pressure is finally easing after several months of stubbornness, and that the Fed may be forced to adopt a more accommodative stance in the coming months.

June CPI: A Significant Downside Surprise

The US Consumer Price Index contracted by 0.4% in June compared to the previous month, a figure well below economists’ expectations, who had anticipated stability or a slight increase. This is the lowest reading since the beginning of 2020, at the very start of the Covid-19 pandemic. This marked slowdown reflects a significant easing of the inflationary pressures that had weighed on the US economy for over two years.

Several components explain this decline. Energy prices fell due to lower crude oil prices, while prices for durable goods and used cars continued their normalization after post-pandemic peaks. Rents, which had been a major factor in persistent inflation, are also showing signs of fatigue, with a deceleration in the housing components of the index. Even service prices, considered the most “sticky” and the hardest to bring down, recorded more moderate increases than expected.

The labor market, although still dynamic, has shown signs of slowing, allowing companies to pass on fewer cost increases to consumers. This overall context of gradual but real disinflation has reinforced investors’ belief that the monetary tightening cycle is nearing its end, even if the Fed maintains a cautious tone.

The Fed Narrative Flips: From Rate Hikes to a Dovish Pivot

What makes this signal particularly important is the radical narrative shift it triggers. For several weeks, the dominant discourse in financial markets had been about a possible new rate hike by the Federal Reserve. Inflation indicators remained above the 2% target, and several FOMC members had adopted a hawkish tone, hinting that further hikes were on the table if inflation did not show sufficient signs of slowing.

The release of the June CPI completely changes the game. Markets now interpret these figures as a signal that the Fed will not only halt its rate hike cycle but could potentially begin considering rate cuts earlier than expected. This is what is called a dovish pivot: a shift in monetary policy orientation toward a more accommodative stance.

Interest rate futures, which incorporate market expectations, reacted immediately. The probabilities of a rate hike in September fell significantly, while bets on a first cut as early as the first quarter of 2027 strengthened. This realignment of expectations has major implications for all risk assets, and particularly for Bitcoin, which has historically benefited from periods of accommodative monetary policy.

Warsh’s Testimony Adds a Political Dimension

The macroeconomic context is further enriched by Kevin Warsh’s testimony before parliamentary committees. Warsh, a former Federal Reserve governor and respected figure in monetary policy circles, provided additional insight into the Fed’s outlook. His remarks, which coincided with the CPI release, highlighted the complexity of the equation facing the Fed: how to reconcile a still-strong labor market with clearly slowing inflationary pressures.

Warsh’s testimony adds a political dimension to the monetary debate. As the US administration faces a complex election year, the trajectory of interest rates becomes a major political issue. A pivot that is too rapid could be perceived as a political rather than an economic decision, while a prolonged maintenance of high rates risks slowing economic activity and worsening the cost of debt servicing.

This delicate balance between monetary rigor and economic support is at the heart of investors’ concerns, and the signal sent by the June CPI gives the Fed a degree of maneuverability it has not had for several quarters.

The Psychological Threshold of $64,000: Why It Matters

Breaking through $64,000 is not simply an insignificant price movement. This level represents a major psychological threshold for Bitcoin for several reasons. First, $64,000 was close to the asset’s all-time highs before the 2024 peak and constituted a resistance zone that had pushed back the price several times in recent months. The fact that Bitcoin crossed this level with bullish momentum supported by a fundamental change in the macroeconomic context is a strong technical signal.

Second, trading volume increased considerably at the time of the breakout, confirming active buyer participation. On-chain data shows that long-term holders did not sell heavily at this level, suggesting that bullish conviction remains intact despite the volatility of recent weeks. Inflows to exchanges increased but mainly on the buyer side, which is a sign of sustained demand.

Finally, the correlation with traditional markets has strengthened. Bitcoin now reacts like a classic risk asset to macroeconomic data, which is both a strength and a weakness. A strength because it broadens its potential investor base and makes it more accessible to institutions. A weakness because it also makes it sensitive to reversals in macroeconomic sentiment. But in the current context of slowing inflation, the correlation works in Bitcoin’s favor.

The Media Leverage Effect: Amplification Confirmed

Media coverage of this event was massive and immediate. CoinDesk published two articles on the same theme — including one with a nearly identical headline — which indicates strong editorial amplification and a desire to capitalize on the news. CoinTelegraph also relayed the information with a slightly different angle, emphasizing the risk of rejection at $64,000 despite the positive CPI dynamic.

This cross-media coverage creates an echo chamber effect that amplifies the price movement. The more the media talks about the $64,000 breakout, the more retail...
