The Countdown Is On: MiCA Comes Into Effect on July 1st
The European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation is reaching its deadline. As of July 1, 2025, crypto platforms will have to comply with a strict framework. According to Alex Fazel, an executive at SwissBorg, 10 million users could find themselves without access to a compliant platform. This deadline is crucial for the European market.
Market Context: Bitcoin Under Pressure, Market Cap Declining
At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading around $62,000, down 5% over the week. The total cryptocurrency market capitalization stands at $2.3 trillion, a decline of 3%. Trading volumes are rising, a sign of increased volatility linked to regulatory uncertainties. Europe accounts for approximately 20% of global trading volumes.
Potential Impact: A Natural Selection of Platforms
Platforms that fail to comply with MiCA will have to cease their operations in the EU. This could lead to a consolidation of the market, with players like Binance or Coinbase already preparing. Users will have to migrate to platforms “built to withstand” supervision. According to Fazel, this is an opportunity for regulated platforms to gain market share. In the long term, MiCA could strengthen the confidence of institutional investors.
What Should Investors Do?
Crypto-asset holders must check whether their platform is compliant. The risk of funds being frozen or services being suspended is real. It is advisable to transfer your assets to approved platforms before July 1st. Exchanges like SwissBorg, Kraken, or Bitstamp are already ahead of the curve on compliance.
