This decision places Kazakhstan alongside a handful of nations that officially hold digital assets in their national reserves. The country has a significant advantage in the mining sector: after China tightened its Bitcoin mining regulations in 2021, a substantial portion of miners relocated to Kazakhstan, attracted by competitive energy costs.
The Kazakh move comes amid growing geopolitical tensions and a search for alternatives to the US dollar. Several nations, particularly BRICS members, are actively exploring de-dollarization mechanisms. Cryptocurrencies, especially Bitcoin, are increasingly viewed by some states as a neutral, non-sovereign store of value.
